Common questions about the air
Why is the air worse in winter?
In winter many homes heat with wood and coal, and still nights trap the smoke near the ground in the basins of Tirana, Elbasan, Korçë and Shkodër. The air usually worsens in the evening and at night and clears when the wind picks up or it rains.
What is Saharan dust?
Southerly winds now and then carry fine desert dust. The sky looks yellow and hazy, PM10 particles rise, and rain can leave mud on cars.
Are these figures measurements?
No. They are a forecast from the Copernicus CAMS model, the same one used across Europe, on a grid of about 10 km. Official station measurements in Albania are published by the National Environment Agency (AKM).
