When pollen is in the air

The pollen season starts at the end of winter and ends in autumn. On the coast and in the south everything begins a few weeks earlier than in Kosovo, Dibër or Korçë, where spring arrives later.

• Alder releases pollen as early as January and February, near rivers and wet ground.
• Birch is the April allergy tree, most common in Kosovo and the northern mountains; there is little of it in the south.
• Olive flowers in May along the coast and in Vlorë, Sarandë, Berat and Elbasan. For many people in the south it is the main spring allergy.
• Grass causes the most allergies: from April to September, peaking in May and June when meadows are mown.
• Mugwort grows along roads and on fallow land; its pollen is noticeable in July and August.
• Ragweed is an invasive plant spreading across the plains of Kosovo and northern Albania. It peaks in September, just when many people think allergy season is over.

What the forecast does not cover

The European CAMS model forecasts only these six species. Cypress (February–April), pine, plane trees and nettles can still cause allergies when our table says "none". The calendar above is a general summary; after a warm spring the season starts earlier.

Making the season easier

Check the pollen forecast a day ahead and plan runs or picnics for rainy days, when pollen is washed out of the air. Do not dry laundry outside on high days. If symptoms last, talk to a doctor or pharmacist: medicines work better when started before the peak.
