Kosovo weather today

Climate

Kosovo has a continental climate: cold, snowy winters, warm and dry summers, and a spring that brings the most precipitation of the year. The Sharr mountains to the south and the Accursed Mountains to the west shut out the sea's influence, so the weather here differs a lot from Albania's, even over short distances.

Two plains

The country has two main plains. On the Kosovo plain, around Prishtina and Mitrovica, the climate is drier and colder, with about 630–650 mm of precipitation a year. On the Dukagjin plain, around Prizren and Gjakova, summers are hotter, up to 31°C on average in August, and winters slightly milder. Peja, at the foot of the Accursed Mountains, gets about 1,110 mm a year, almost twice Prishtina's.

Winter

Winter runs from December to February. In the towns January averages 5–7°C by day and -1 to -2°C at night, and in cold spells the temperature falls below -20°C. Fog and air pollution are common on calm winter mornings. In the mountains snow lasts for months: at Brezovica, about 1,700 m, January nights average -9°C.

Spring and summer

Spring brings showers and thunderstorms, with May the wettest month in most of the country. Summer is warm and sunny, 28–31°C by day, with cool nights of about 16–18°C.
