Climate

Prizren lies in southern Kosovo at the foot of the Sharr mountains, where the Lumbardh river leaves its gorge for the Dukagjin plain. At about 410 metres and sheltered by mountains to the south, it has the mildest climate of Kosovo's large towns: hot summers and gentler winters than Prishtina.

Summer

Summer is hot and sunny. July and August average highs of 30–31°C, about two degrees above Prishtina, with nights around 18°C. The 1991–2020 record is 41°C. Summer evenings are the best time to walk along the Lumbardh and in the old town, when mountain air cools the streets.

Winter

Winter is cold but milder than in the rest of Kosovo: January has about 7°C by day and -1°C at night. Snow falls every winter but melts faster than in Prishtina, while on the Sharr mountains above town it lasts for months. Precipitation is about 780 mm a year, most in May and December.

When to visit

May and June are the greenest and most pleasant months, while August, with Dokufest and many visitors from the diaspora, is the hottest and liveliest. September and October, at 20–25°C by day, are ideal for mountain walks.
