Data sources and methodology

Sources

We select, combine and describe the data in our own words. Explicit commercial permission for ASK and some original reports remains unconfirmed.

MET Norway, Locationforecast
Hourly forecast and days 1–9.
ECMWF IFS (open data)
Days after MET Norway up to day 15, gusts and precipitation probability; for peaks and passes also upper-air temperatures, visibility and snow on the ground.
Open-Meteo (open-source server, open data)
Our own server for ECMWF, CAMS and marine models; the free hosted API does not permit ad-supported sites.
Copernicus CAMS (European regional ensemble, global)
Air quality, pollen (6 species) and Saharan dust forecasts for 4 days, and the UV index.
Modelet detare në Open-Meteo (Copernicus, DWD, ECMWF, Météo-France)
Sea temperature and waves use automatic Best Match selection; the underlying model can vary.
EEA, Bathing Water Directive: status of bathing water
The official yearly EU water quality class of the coastal bathing sites (the last 4 seasons).
Copernicus ERA5
Climate averages 1991–2020.
NOAA OISST v2.1
Monthly average sea temperatures.
EMSC, Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre
Earthquakes of magnitude 2 and above, updated hourly, for the last 5 years.
USGS Earthquake Hazards Program
Earthquakes, only when EMSC does not respond.
NOAA Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov)
The API delivers Tirana and Pristina METAR and TAF reports; original reports may come from national services.
Natural Earth
Country borders on the earthquake map.
Wikidata
Coordinates and heights of the peaks and mountain passes.
Copernicus DEM GLO-90
Height checks for peaks and passes and some DEM-derived elevations; source and modification notices appear below.
OpenStreetMap
The road line we used to find the highest point of two passes.
GeoNames
Names, coordinates, elevations and some population values; we select and process the data.
ASK, Regjistrimi i Popullsisë 2024 (Kosovë)
Town and village populations from ASK 2024 tables; we select and process the data.
INSTAT, Censusi 2023 (Shqipëri)
Administrative-unit populations from the 2023 Census; we do not republish the full publication.
IGJEUM / IGJEO, buletini i rreziqeve natyrore
Official Albania bulletin; we parse it automatically and summarize by county.

Attribution notes

Data from MET Norway. Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service information. Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Weather forecasts are combined and summarized by Moti; they are not official notices.

Moti selects EMSC FDSN earthquakes and associates them with settlements. EEA bathing-water classes describe the last reported season, not today. ASK 2024 and INSTAT 2023 Census population figures are selected and processed by Moti.

How it works

  • Every hour we download the MET Norway forecast for every place, adjusted to its elevation.
  • Days MET Norway fully covers (usually 9) come from it; later days, up to day 15, come from ECMWF. Days 11–15 are shown only as a trend.
  • If a source fails, we show the last valid data with its update time; after 24 hours we show climate only.
  • Climate averages cover 1991–2020 from ERA5 and slightly smooth extremes compared with weather stations.
  • Air quality, pollen and dust are a CAMS model forecast (about a 10 km grid), not station measurements. Levels follow the EEA European index and the SILAM/CAMS pollen thresholds; dust levels are our own estimate.
  • Earthquakes come from EMSC every hour (USGS only if EMSC fails). We list those up to 30 km from a town or village in Albania or Kosovo, plus M4 and above up to 100 km from the border (marked with their country), and assign each to the county or district of the nearest one. How far a quake was felt is our own simple estimate from magnitude and depth.
  • The beach-day score (0–10) is our own, from the forecast sea temperature, waves, wind, air, rain, clouds and UV. Water quality is the official yearly EU classification (EEA) from last summer’s samples, not today’s water.
  • For peaks and mountain passes the forecast is worked out for their real height. The hiking day on a summit and the road risk (snow, ice, fog, wind) are our own estimate. We work out the freezing level from ECMWF upper-air temperatures. Albania and Kosovo have no official avalanche service, so we never rate avalanche danger; we have no road closure data.
  • The only measurements on the site are those of Tirana and Pristina airports (METAR reports, every 30 minutes), which we turn into plain words. We hide the values when the latest report is more than 3 hours old. The fog days by month are our own count from the reports we have collected.

"Heads-up" notices

Notices come from our forecast for the next 5 days: heat ≥ 37°C, rain ≥ 40 mm a day, gusts ≥ 70 km/h, snow in populated places, frost ≤ -10°C and UV ≥ 9. They are not official warnings, and no notice does not mean no risk.
