Climate

Peja lies on the western edge of the Dukagjin plain, about 550 metres above sea level, where the Lumbardh river leaves the Rugova Gorge. The Accursed Mountains rise right above town and stop moist air from the Adriatic. That makes Peja Kosovo's wettest town, with about 1,110 mm of precipitation a year, almost twice Prishtina's.

Rain and snow

Precipitation is spread over the whole year. May is the wettest month, with about 115 mm on 17 days, but even July has 14 wet days, mostly afternoon showers that build over the mountains. In winter it often falls as snow: January has about 6°C by day and -2°C at night, and the lowest value in the 1991–2020 data is -23°C.

Summer

Summer is warm but not hot: July and August average highs of 28°C and nights of about 16°C. Cool air flowing down from Rugova in the evening keeps Peja pleasant even in midsummer. June and September are the best months for mountain walks.

Risks

The main risks are heavy summer downpours over the mountains, which can quickly raise the Lumbardh and cause landslides in the Rugova Gorge, and heavy snow on mountain roads in winter.
