Climate

Korca sits on a plateau about 870 metres above sea level in the south-east of the country, far from the sea's influence. It has the most continental climate of Albania's large towns: cold winters with snow and warm summers with cool nights. That makes its summer far easier to bear than Tirana's or the coastal plains'.

Winter

Winter lasts from December to February. January averages only 6°C by day and -2°C at night, so frost is common and snow falls several times every winter. In cold spells from the north the temperature drops much lower: the lowest value in the 1991–2020 data is -26°C. Roads into town, especially the mountain passes, can be icy, so check the forecast before driving.

Summer

Summer is pleasant. In July and August highs are around 28°C, but nights fall to 15–16°C, about seven degrees below the coast. Rainfall is modest, about 700 mm a year, mostly in autumn and winter; July and August have only five rainy days each.

When to visit

The best time to visit is June to September. In winter, Dardha (1,344 m), just 12 km away, and Voskopoja (1,199 m), 16 km away, have the most reliable snow. Lake Ohrid at Pogradec is about 30 km to the north.
