Climate

Saranda sits on the Ionian coast opposite Corfu, in a bay sheltered by mountains to the east. The climate is classic Mediterranean: long, hot, almost rainless summers and mild winters with heavy rain. July averages only 19 mm of rain on 3 days, while November gets about 260 mm, one of the highest totals on the Albanian coast.

Summer and sea

Beach season runs from June to late September. Highs are 26°C in June, 29–30°C in July and August and 26°C in September, with 13–14 hours of sunshine a day. The sea reaches 24–25°C in July and August and stays around 24°C in September; even in October it is still 22°C, so swimming often continues until mid-month. Summer nights are warm, around 23°C.

Rain and winter

Late autumn and winter are the rainy season. From November to February 160–260 mm fall each month, often as heavy downpours with southerly wind. Winter is mild: January has about 12°C by day and 7°C at night, and snow in town is almost unheard of. Winter storms can stop the ferries to Corfu.
