Climate

Tirana has a Mediterranean climate with a continental touch: hot, dry summers and mild but wet winters. The city lies on a plain about 110 metres above sea level, between Mount Dajti to the east and the hills that separate it from the coast. The sea breeze barely reaches it, so summer days feel hotter here than in Durres.

Summer

July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of 30–31°C and only 5–6 rainy days. During heatwaves the temperature passes 38°C; the highest value in the 1991–2020 data is 40°C. Summer nights stay around 20°C, so the afternoons, roughly 1 pm to 5 pm, are the hardest part of the day.

Rain and winter

Rain returns in September and peaks in November and December, with 136–140 mm a month. About 1,100 mm fall in a year, more than in most Central European capitals. January is the coldest month, around 11°C by day and 4°C at night. Frost forms on some clear nights, but snow in the city is rare and usually melts the same day.

When to visit

The most pleasant times to visit are April to June and mid-September to October, with highs of 19–27°C and 12–14 hours of sunshine a day. The main hazards are the July and August heat and the autumn downpours, which quickly flood streets and underpasses.

The nearest beach is at Golem, about 27 km away. For a cooler summer escape, the top of Mount Dajti, above 1,000 metres, is on average about 5 degrees cooler than the city.
