About the weather in Vlora
Climate
Vlora lies where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, in a bay sheltered by the Karaburun peninsula and the Llogara mountains. The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry, sunny summers and mild, wet winters. In July and August average highs are around 31°C, so Vlora is hotter than Durres, but the afternoon sea breeze makes the heat easier on the shore.
The sea
The swimming season is long. The sea averages 22°C in June, 24–25°C in July and August and still 24°C in September; in October it stays around 22°C, fine for a swim on sunny days. From June to August only 5–7 days a month bring rain and the sun shines 13–14 hours a day.
Rain and winter
Rain returns in September and peaks in November, with about 140 mm, for about 1,050 mm a year. Winter is mild: January has 12°C by day and 6°C at night, and snow in town hardly ever falls. The main winter hazards are storms from the south, bringing strong wind and waves to the shore, and heavy rain that can flood low-lying areas.
When to visit
For the beach, the best time is late June to mid-September. Spring and October are good for walks at Kanina, Zvernec and Karaburun.
Nearby
