Climate

Fier lies in the Myzeqe plain, the largest lowland in Albania, about 15 km from the sea. The flat terrain makes its weather straightforward: long, hot, dry summers and mild winters with moderate rain. With about 880 mm a year, Fier gets less rain than Tirana or Durres, because the mountains that lift moist air are far to the east.

Summer

July and August average highs of 31–32°C and only 4 rainy days. In heatwaves the temperature reaches 38–40°C; the 1991–2020 record is 42°C, one of the highest in the country. Summer afternoons on the plain are tiring, so outdoor work is best done early in the morning. Only 26–27 mm of rain fall in July and in August.

Winter and rain

Winter is mild: January has about 12°C by day and 6°C at night, and frost is uncommon. Rain is concentrated from September to December, peaking in November (115 mm). In very wet years the flat land and full canals can cause local flooding in the villages of the plain.

Spring

Spring comes early: highs are about 19°C in April and 24°C in May. That makes April and May the best time to visit nearby Apollonia, before the summer heat.

Beaches

Clear-water beaches start south of Vlora, at Orikum, about 45 km away.
